Sofia Kovalevskaya became the first woman to be granted a PhD in mathematics in 1874. This was noteworthy, since, as a woman, she had not been allowed to attend university classes. Even with a doctorate, she struggled to find a university where a woman could teach. In 1884, she was offered a position in Stockholm where, in addition to lecturing, she served as editor of the journal Acta Mathematica. When in 1886 she solved a problem that had eluded mathematicians for hundreds of years, she was praised as having a mind of great inventiveness. She began to correspond as an equal with the best mathematicians of her time and in 1889 was finally granted a life-time full professorship.

Her remarkable inventiveness showed itself in her writing as well as mathematics. Sandra DeLozier Coleman shares with us the first English translations of nine poems and two plays that reveal Kovalevskaya’s great passion for life. The semi-autobiographical plays, How It Was and How It Might Have Been, express a sincere desire to solve the problems encountered by people like herself and her sister in their everyday Struggle for Happiness. The poems and plays are introduced by the colorful story behind Coleman’s decades-long translation effort and are enriched by biographical commentary on Kovalevskaya’s writings.

Even people quick to say they are not good at, or never liked, math will likely find themselves enjoying this unusual mix of patterned thoughts and images, where ideas related to math and physics are intertwined with thoughts on love and truth. There are some poems in Swirling Symmetry only mathematicians may appreciate, but, for the most part, the ideas considered are of interest to us all.

Exploring complex ideas expressed in the form of gently patterned rhyme, while looking for hidden connections to totally abstract, but consistently orderly, images, may provide a brief respite when the world becomes jarringly chaotic. Words that flow like waves on a sandy shore, and images that clearly follow rules, can have the emotional effect of creating a sense of peace and calm, even a feeling that perhaps everything does have its proper place in this complicated, and yet amazingly ordered, universe.

In an age when the world can feel especially dark, Surprised By Glory is a collection of true stories and hopeful essays that invites the reader to consider setting down the fear and anger of the current moment in order to seek instead the grandeur in this most fascinating and diverse world of ours.

"How we spend our days, of course, is how we spend our lives," ...and we only have one life––this one. Thus, the stories in Surprised By Glory encourage us to spend our wild and precious life in search of the sublime and in the pursuit of the glorious, for such searching is worth our efforts and produces remarkable, even miraculous, results.

In a culture that encourages and applauds the search for perfection in all its exterior manifestations, Surprised by Imperfection is a collection of essays that reminds readers of the exquisite beauty in the dappled and imperfect aspects of the vast world, seeks out the sanctity of the ordinary in all its seasons, and invites us back to childhood’s grand sense of wonder.

In each story, Shari Brand Ray considers the sacredness of the small moments in life. With humor and inordinate love for the everyday, Ray connects readers to the glories of the natural world through a return to close observation. In the spring she finds meaning in watching two dogs run in the warm sunshine along the banks of the spring-swollen Mississippi River, and in autumn she experiences the terrifying beauty of leaving her seven-year-old daughter in a Belgian girls’ school where neither she nor her daughter yet speak the language. In winter Ray writes of personal wounding, the moments following a life-threatening head-on collision on a snowy night in Memphis as she waits for the ambulance and contemplates her own unknown future.

Dr Berman is a gynecologic cancer specialist who cared for thousands of women over a nearly 50-year career. Many of his patients were cured of their cancers and were able to return to a normal life. Some were not. All of them had stories to share. The stories are real, sometimes sad and inspiring but always informative. This book shares some of their stories which demonstrate the virtues of kindness, forgiveness, compassion, spirituality, humor, humility and, frankly, sometimes just good luck. Most importantly, this book will challenge the reader to look in the mirror and encourage them to become their better self.
