Alice Louise Bohannon Hall (1867-1945).

Grandma Hall, as she was affectionately called by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren was widowed at a relatively young age with ten children still at home. A determined young woman, Alice Louise went back to school and earned a certificate in agriculture. She then became a successful farmer in northern Mississippi and raised all those children on her own.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Grandma Hall. She passed some 25 years before I entered her extended family through marriage. But this beautiful portrait of Grandma Hall hung in a place of honor in the home of her youngest daughter who was my wife’s grandmother, Mamaw. The portrait was painted by Mamaw's daughter, Clynese, who was to become my mother-in-law. At Christmastime, we would all gather in Mamaw’s living room to talk and play games under the watchful eyes of Grandma Hall. The stories my in-laws would tell about the matriarch of their clan and the respect they still held for her, even after all those years, always impressed me. Grandma Hall definitely knew the value of education, particularly for young women and girls. Knowing this, I can imagine that she would have been very proud of her great granddaughter, Sandra DeLozier Coleman, whose book Mathematician with the Soul of a Poet: Poems and Plays of Sofia Kovalevskaya pays homage to the first woman to obtain a PhD in Mathematics.

So, when it came time to pick a name for our new publishing company, I suggested that we name our company after Grandma Hall. What better model could there be for a company that wants to support women's and girls' education?
